The 6 Lamaze Healthy Birth Practices
The Lamaze Philosophy can be summed up by our Six Healthy Birth Practices, based on up-to-date evidence-based research. The goal is to help guide families toward the best outcomes by promoting natural birth processes, reducing unnecessary interventions, and encouraging bonding between parent and baby.
- 1.
Let labor begin on its own.
- 2.
Walk, move around and change position throughout labor.
- 3.
Bring a loved one, friend or doula for continuous support.
- 4.
Avoid interventions that are not medically necessary.
- 5.
Avoid giving birth on your back and follow your body's urge to push.
- 6.
Keep mother and baby together; it's best for mother, baby and breastfeeding.
These fundamental principles help simplify your birth with proven practices that help alleviate your fears and manage pain, regardless of your baby's size, labor length and complexity or confidence level.
Lamaze Education Testimonials

“After taking my Lamaze Childbirth Education class, I feel less scared of giving birth, I am actually excited to implement what I have learned in real life during labor. The most important takeaways for me were to be as prepared as I can be, but to learn to accept outcomes that may not go according to plan… The class was very thorough, and I learned more than I expected to.”
— Lamaze Class Parent
“My Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator was incredibly knowledgeable and introduced intimidating topics in an approachable, light-hearted way. Pregnancy and postpartum are such a sensitive time, yet parents are often bombarded with unsolicited advice, commentary, and criticism, which can put you in your head and take you out of the moment with your family... It's some real talk, shared with some real empathy.”
